Foreshadowing is when the book or show gives you little hints about what is to come later in the story.
- Jonas gives little hints to you throughout the novel. His fate will be very clear to you before you finish the book.
- Jonas said that he felt apprehensive about the ceremony and that something bad might happen to him (Lowry 6). Thus, he got the job Receiver of Memory which is one of the most honorable jobs in the Community and doesn't get handed out every year (76).
- Jonas was playing catch with an apple when he noticed that something on the apple had changed (30). Thus, you know that he is special because Asher didn't see that.
- When Jonas saw Fiona's hair, it flashed red and then it went it away just like the apple(114). He found out that he was seeing the color red. The giver had told him that it was normal and pretty soon he will be seeing all the colors all the time (119-120).
- Jonas says to Gabriel that there will soon be joy, happiness, and love (161-162). Thus, that is what happened at the end of the book (225).
