Jobs
The jobs are selected at the age of twelve, to be more precise, at the Ceremony of Twelve. At the Ceremony, the Chief Elder announces what jobs the other Elders have selected for the twelves. The way they select the job is; what they do in their free time, were they did a lot of the volunteer hours, and they want to know your attitude. Those three things help with the Elders decide on the job for the kids before the Ceremony (Lowry 18-21).

Family
In the novel, The Giver, they use a process similar to an arranged marriage. In the book, people have to “apply” for a spouse (Lowry 61). It may take months to years until the perfect match is made by the Committee of Elders (62). Different characteristics from both spouse have to “interact” perfectly (62). However, some people are not permitted the right to apply for a spouse. In this case, this person might be working the late shift and does not have a strong enough communication ability which is required for a family unit (10). After the couple has been together for 3 years and the Committee of Elders has monitored the family, they can “apply" for a child (62).
Pakistan has 2 different types of arranged marriages (Arranged Marriages a Tradition in Pakistan). In semi-arranged marriages, the parents do not have as much say in the final decision. In fully arranged marriages the parents have all say into who you marry. Fully arranged marriages are more likely in communities that are not well educated(Arranged Marriages a Tradition in Pakistan). In India’s past, the two people that were getting married had no input (Arranged Marriage). As time has moved on, the bride and grove have a little more say. The process starts by the the families matching up there their kids horoscope and seeing if both of the families backgrounds patch up. Once a match is made, an engagement ceremony is held so everything can be finalized (Arranged Marriage). The marriage is a big event.
